2021 Annual Report2021 ANNUAL REPORT BOCATC.ORG 2 Introduction The Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC) was incorporated in 1989 as a not-for-profit credentialing agency to provide a certification program for the entry level athletic training profession. The BOC establishes both the standards for the practice of athletic training and the continuing education requirements for BOC Certified Athletic Trainers (ATs). The BOC also works with state regulatory agencies to provide credential information, professional conduct guidelines and regulatory standards on certification issues. The BOC also has the only accredited certification program for ATs in the United States and has an International Arrangement with Athletic Rehabilitation Therapy Ireland (ARTI), British Association of Sport Rehabilitators (BASRaT) and Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA). BOC VISION The BOC exists so that health care professionals worldwide have access to globally recognized standards of competence and exceptional credentialing programs that support them in the protection of the public and the provision of excellent patient care. BOC MISSION To provide exceptional credentialing programs for health care professionals to assure protection of the public. BOC VALUES Integrity, Professionalism, Fairness, Transparency, Service MEMBER OF THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU The BOC has been a BBB Accredited Business since 2010. Accreditation in BBB is by invitation to companies that, at a minimum, have been in business for at least one year, have demonstrated sound business practices and meet the BBB accreditation standards. To be accredited by the BBB, an organization affirms that it meets and will abide by the standards of building trust, advertising honestly, telling the truth, being transparent, honoring promises, being responsive, safeguarding privacy and embodying integrity.2021 ANNUAL REPORT BOCATC.ORG 3 Letter from President and CEO During 2021 the athletic training profession and the BOC continued to adapt and thrive. The BOC progressed, making headway on key strategic priorities, pushing the envelope yet not compromising the high standards expected of our profession. We appreciate the contributions of our many volunteers, partners and staff as several major initiatives launched in 2021. Our first-ever board-certified specialty credential, the Board Certified Specialist in Orthopedics (BCS-O), exam launched – an effort 10 years in the making. This is a huge step in elevating the role and level of recognition of ATs within health care. A BOC priority is to continually demonstrate the value of the BCS-O and ATC ® credentials to employers and potential employers of ATs. The BOC announced the introduction of the International Arrangement for the athletic training and therapy profession this summer – a step toward growing the profession worldwide. This arrangement, which ensures comparable best practices, quality education and professional standards, provides opportunities for those in the profession to expand their reach globally. In a push forward, the board approved moving the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Advocacy Strategies (IDEAS) Task Force to full committee status. The IDEAS Committee will take the task force’s work over the past year and bring it to life, implementing strategic initiatives within the areas of the BOC exam, continuing education, the athletic training profession, and BOC administration and operations. We unveiled a new brand for the BOC. This new bold and modern look provides the perfect vision of what lies ahead for athletic training and the BOC. BOC360, the portal that houses candidate, AT and BOC Approved Provider profiles, was launched, replacing BOC Central. This elevated platform is designed to provide an enhanced user experience for information and process management, as well as communication. 2021 ANNUAL REPORT BOCATC.ORG 4 The BOC’s strength comes from its leaders and volunteers. As such, we are working to enrich and expand our work with volunteers by creating a volunteer engagement and outreach department. This area’s primary goal is leadership development, expansion and diversification. The BOC board’s work supported all 2021 initiatives. In addition, this leadership group created new governing policies, as well as a board self-assessment tool to continue to maximize its impact. As the 2021 recertification period ended, Evidence Based Practice (EBP) as a separate continuing education (CE) category was eliminated. Going forward, EBP principles will be seamlessly incorporated into all Category A programs, enhancing CE quality. We took additional steps this year to explore a new, enhanced avenue for AT professional development, reaching out to ATs for their input on a future system of Continuing Professional Certification (CPC). In addition, we gathered information on potential facets of this program that will most benefit each and every AT. Our work continues and we remain dedicated to furthering our services to ATs, candidates, state regulators, educators and BOC Approved Providers (APs). BOC staff remained steady and committed through a very busy year that saw impressive results and strong service levels. The BOC’s priority is our current and future credential holders, your patients, the public and all of the stakeholders we serve. This report is published to provide an overview of the BOC’s work and its accomplishments on behalf of all our stakeholders. Sincerely, Anne M.
