Athletic Training Health Care Services ATHLETIC TRAINERS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SAFE ACTIVITY AND DANGEROUS INJURIES ATHLETIC TRAINER DEFINITION Athletic Trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. You may have worked with an AT if you are on a sports team. If you’ve seen a medical professional team assist a pro sports athlete on the court or field, that likely included an AT! AT EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION Educational programs to become an AT are at the master’s level where students learn in medical-based models through hands-on learning and clinical experiences, as well as lectures and demonstrations. After finishing the degree, the student must pass a board exam through the Board of Certification (BOC) to practice in most states. ATs can go on to earn specializations or even a Doctorate in Athletic Training. WHERE ATS WORK ATs work with athletes at all levels – youth sports, middle and high schools, college/university, professional sports and performing arts. In addition, ATs can be found in other professions such as the armed forces, public safety, industrial settings and more! ATs are uniquely qualified to respond to emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions including cardiac abnormalities and heat stroke.
