Athletic Trainer Director Jim Malseed, MEd, ATC, RAA Athletic Trainer Director Jan Lauer, MA, ATC Athletic Trainer Director Patrick Sexton, EdD, ATC Athletic Trainer Director Kimberly Detwiler, MS, LAT, ATC, CSCS Athletic Trainer Director-Elect Neil Curtis, EdD, LAT, ATC Athletic Trainer Director-Elect Michael Carroll, MEd, LAT, ATC Public Director Amy DeRosa Public Director-Elect David A. Montgomery Executive Director Denise Fandel, MBA, CAE As I write this letter, we are in the middle of National Athletic Training Month, and it’s never been a better time to be an Athletic Trainer (AT)! We had our March Board of Directors meeting in Omaha to discuss the environment ATs and the BOC find ourselves in, and we feel it is looking bright. We discussed opportunities and threats in the next 3 to 5 years. Of course, the changes in healthcare and the AT educational process were major topics, but we also had extensive discussion on the regulatory climate. ATs and other professions face immediate challenges to occupational licensing; our discussions will continue as we finalize our plans in our July meeting. We also welcomed 3 new directors to the Board, David Montgomery, Public Director and Neil Curtis and Mike Carroll, AT Directors. They have all have jumped in with both feet, already making a difference in their contributions for our stakeholders. The BOC has been very active advocating for ATs and your qualifications and training in a variety of jurisdictions. We’ve partnered with the Washington Department of Health to raise awareness of licensed ATs in their state. We’re participating in the National Professional Licensing Coalition to decrease the liability for ATs serving on state regulatory boards. We’ve also worked with the North Dakota AT Regulatory Board to streamline the license renewal process. BOC is hosting the eighth BOC Athletic Trainers Regulatory Conference July 14-15, 2017, bringing together regulatory boards and staff members as well as state AT association leaders from around the US. The collaboration between professional associations and regulators is critical. We all are concerned about the health and safety of the public we serve, and we’re excited to once again facilitate this collaboration. If you’re going to be in the Omaha neighborhood in July, please consider attending. (Continued on next page) www.bocatc.org summer 2017 | 4 We’ve also been of service to you, our ATs, as well. The Facility Standards Work Group has completed their work on a new document, Guiding Principles for AT Policy and Procedure Development. This is now available on our website. A companion interactive tool, much like the Facility Principles online resource tool, will be available later this summer. We’ll be presenting more information on the new document as well as the Facility Principles at the BOC sponsored session, Tuesday, June 27 during the NATA Clinical Symposia & AT Expo in Houston, Texas and hope you can join us. The Maintenance of Competence (MOC) Task Force is continuing their work. In December, the Board accepted the report from the group’s first meeting. The Task Force is now working to develop frameworks for 3 of the components discussed in their report. Their longer term (1-3 year) goal is to develop pilot programs for the components. These pilot projects may be similar to the BOC Portfolio Project that is currently underway. The purpose of the pilot projects will be to gather feedback from practicing ATs. Any recommendations from this group that could impact the certification maintenance requirements will first be distributed for public comment. On behalf of the BOC Board, I want to thank you for your commitment to providing quality healthcare services to your patients, athletes and clients. The BOC Board of Directors and staff are committed to providing you with timely information that we trust will be helpful to you as a practitioner, educator, BOC Approved Provider or member of the public and regulatory communities. OPENING SOON: BOC BOARD POSITION www.bocatc.org summer 2017 | 8 The BOC Guiding Principles for AT Policy and Procedure Development features educational materials and templates to assist Athletic Trainers (ATs) and other appropriate individuals in the development of policies and procedures. Policies and procedures are a critical component of a risk management plan. Policies and procedures provide individuals with instructions to carry out the organization’s expectations. When written properly, clear expectations (policies) and instructions (procedures) allow for a policy to be implemented and provide standardization in daily operational activities. Policies and procedures provide clarity when dealing with issues and activities that are critical to health and safety, legal liabilities and regulatory requirements. Policies and procedures help organization leaders communicate desired outcomes to employees and other individuals; further, they help clarify roles and responsibilities within the organization. Look for the new document now on the BOC website. A companion interactive tool, much like the Facility Principles online resource tool, will be available later this Summer 2017. THE BOC GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR AT POLICY AND PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT BOC NEWS As healthcare professionals, Athletic Trainers (ATs) are seldom in the limelight. Being noticed generally means an athlete has been injured – something no one wants to happen. However, that can make it difficult for everyone to understand the important work ATs do. That’s why the BOC, along with the NATA, is working to raise awareness of the work that ATs do every day to keep people healthy and active. The following advertisements – which so far are running in the BOC’s home of Omaha, Nebraska as local public relation pieces – highlight the role of the AT in keeping young athletes safe, particularly as youth sports grow increasingly demanding and competitive. These ads are now available to you for promoting awareness in your publications and online. Select an advertisement and fill out the form online. We will provide the advertising artwork file, in PDF format, to you within 2 business days. Standard artwork file dimensions are 5x7, 8x10, 8 ½ x 11 and 24x36. If you have any questions, please contact Krystal Callaway-Neppl at KrystalCN@bocatc.org. PROMOTING AWARENESSThe 2017 BOC Athletic Trainer Regulatory Conference will be held July 14-15 in Omaha, Nebraska. The conference assists regulators and state leaders in developing strategic initiatives and resolutions to protect both the public and credential holder. Program topics are appropriate for all audiences with a vested interest in the athletic training regulation, leadership and public protection. Athletic Trainers will receive continuing education credits for attending. Fees for the conference are $250 for general attendees and $100 for students from a CAATE accredited program. The registration fee includes breakfast, lunch and an evening reception on Friday and breakfast on Saturday. The conference begins at 8:00am on Friday, July 14 and ends at noon on Saturday, July 15. Personal invitations have been sent to state regulatory agencies and state association Presidents. These invitations include an event invite code which will allow them to take advantage of BOC funding. All other guests can visit the BOC website to register for the conference. Learn more at www.bocatc.org/conference. New activities will qualify for Evidence Based Practice (EBP) CEUs during the 2016-2017 reporting period. The expanded list will help ATs receive credit for activities that rely on EBP principles but were not previously counted under this category. At the right is a list of these activities. ATs can search the BOC’s new online directory to find all BOC approved home studies and live events, including EBP Category programs. The directory is continuously updated. Complete information on eligible EBP Category programs is available in the 2016-2017 Certification Maintenance Requirements document.
